leaf mulch

Decomposing foliage layer

Leaf mulch is a layer of shredded or decomposed leaves spread over soil to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and enrich the ground as it breaks down.

Gardeners make it by collecting fallen leaves and letting them decompose or running them through a shredder: I spread leaf mulch around the tomatoes to keep the roots cool.
