language system

Rules governing speech

A language system is the underlying structure of rules, patterns, and relationships that govern how a language works—its grammar, sounds, vocabulary, and syntax functioning as an interconnected whole.

Linguists study language systems to understand how meaning is constructed and communicated.

The term also applies to constructed languages or formal systems: Esperanto is an artificial language system designed for international communication.
