primal screams

Raw emotional howls

Primal screams are raw, unrestrained cries expressing intense emotion—rage, grief, frustration, or catharsis.

The term comes from primal scream therapy, a 1970s psychological treatment that encouraged patients to release repressed pain through uninhibited screaming.

Now used more loosely: I let out a primal scream when I saw the election results.

The singular primal scream suggests a single cathartic release; the plural often describes repeated outbursts or the general phenomenon.
