land slugs

Gastropods without shells

Land slugs are terrestrial gastropod mollusks—essentially snails without external shells.

They move by muscular contractions along a trail of secreted mucus, leaving the characteristic slime trails visible on sidewalks and garden paths.

Most are nocturnal herbivores that damage plants, making them garden pests: The land slugs decimated my hostas overnight.
