joint tenants

Property co-owners legally

Joint tenants are two or more people who own property together with equal shares and rights of survivorship.

When one joint tenant dies, their share automatically passes to the surviving owner or owners rather than to their heirs: The deed listed them as joint tenants, so when she died, he became sole owner.

This distinguishes joint tenancy from tenants in common, where each owner's share can be inherited separately.
