joint-stock

Combined capital enterprise

Joint-stock describes a business structure where ownership is divided into shares held by multiple investors.

A joint-stock company pools capital from shareholders who share in profits and losses proportionally.

The arrangement allows larger enterprises than individual wealth could support: The Virginia Company was a joint-stock venture.

The term is now mostly historical, replaced by corporation.
