jerkwaters

Remote, unimportant places

Jerkwaters are insignificant, small, or backward towns—places too minor to matter.

The word comes from early railroad slang: trains stopping at small towns without water towers had to "jerk" water from streams or tanks by hand.

A jerkwater town was barely worth the stop.
