jazz quintet

Five improvising musicians

A jazz quintet is a jazz ensemble of five musicians.

The classic configuration features a rhythm section of piano, bass, and drums supporting two horn players—typically trumpet and saxophone.

This format became central to bebop and hard bop in the 1950s and 60s, balancing harmonic complexity with room for individual improvisation: Miles Davis's quintet with John Coltrane defined the sound of an era.
