j-stroke
Stern paddler's technique
A j-stroke is a canoe paddle technique where the paddler adds a brief outward push at the end of each stroke, tracing a J-shape in the water.
This corrects the natural tendency of a canoe to veer away from the paddling side, allowing a solo paddler or stern paddler to maintain a straight course without switching sides: She kept the canoe tracking true with a steady j-stroke.
