intrusive ideas

Unbidden mental visitors

Intrusive ideas are unwanted thoughts that enter the mind unbidden and feel difficult to control or dismiss.

The term appears in psychology to describe disturbing or distressing thoughts that seem to come from nowhere: She struggled with intrusive ideas about harming herself.

Unlike ordinary stray thoughts, intrusive ideas often feel alien to one's values or intentions, which makes them especially troubling.

They're associated with anxiety disorders, OCD, and trauma responses, though most people experience mild versions occasionally.
