international convention
Nations' formal pact
An international convention is a formal agreement between nations on matters of shared concern—human rights, environmental protection, maritime law, or conduct during war.
Countries that sign and ratify a convention commit to following its terms.
The Geneva Conventions govern treatment of prisoners of war.
Convention also refers to the diplomatic gathering where such agreements are negotiated.
