implant rejection
Foreign body reaction
Implant rejection is the body's immune response against a surgically placed foreign object—whether a medical device like a pacemaker or joint replacement, or transplanted tissue.
The immune system identifies the implant as non-self and attacks it, causing inflammation, pain, or failure of the implant to integrate.
The surgeon warned that implant rejection was a possibility with the knee replacement.
