ignorance is bliss

Happy without knowing

Ignorance is bliss expresses the idea that not knowing about problems or unpleasant truths can be preferable to knowing: Sometimes ignorance is bliss—I wish you hadn't told me about the layoffs.

The phrase comes from Thomas Gray's 1742 poem but now functions as a freestanding proverb, often used ruefully or ironically when someone learns something they'd rather not have known.
