ice patches
Slippery frozen spots
Ice patches are isolated areas of ice on a surface that is otherwise clear, typically found on roads, sidewalks, or trails where conditions allow ice to form or persist in spots: Watch for ice patches on the bridge.
Unlike continuous ice coverage, patches create unpredictable hazards because they appear intermittently.
Black ice—nearly invisible ice on pavement—often occurs as ice patches.
