hot-button issue

Politically charged subject

A hot-button issue is a topic that provokes strong emotional reactions and sharp disagreement—abortion, gun control, immigration.

The metaphor suggests a button that, when pressed, triggers an immediate response.

Politicians and media often focus on hot-button issues because they reliably generate engagement: The debate quickly turned to hot-button issues like taxes and healthcare.
