holing up

Going to ground

Holing up means withdrawing to a secure or hidden place, often to wait out danger or avoid contact with others.

The phrase evokes an animal retreating to its hole: The fugitives holed up in an abandoned farmhouse.

It can also describe voluntary isolation: I'm holing up this weekend to finish my thesis.
