hobo jungle
Transient outdoor encampment
A hobo jungle is a makeshift camp where homeless itinerants gather, typically near railroad tracks or under bridges.
The term dates from the early twentieth century when migrant workers rode freight trains between jobs: They found a hobo jungle outside the rail yard where men shared coffee and stories.
The camps offered temporary community and shared resources among those living rough.
