Favorite recurring topics
Hobby horses have two distinct senses united by playfulness.
The original is a child's toy—a stick with a horse's head for pretend riding.
From this comes the figurative sense: a topic someone returns to obsessively, a pet subject they can't stop talking about.
Don't get him started on tax reform—it's his hobby horse.
The compound also names the costumed horse figures in folk dances and parades.
