heel prick
Infant blood test
A heel prick is a medical procedure in which a small puncture is made in an infant's heel to collect blood samples, typically performed shortly after birth to screen for genetic and metabolic disorders.
The heel is used because it provides adequate blood flow and is less traumatic than venipuncture in newborns: The nurse explained that the heel prick would test for conditions like PKU and hypothyroidism.
