heart rate zones
Exercise intensity bands
Heart rate zones are ranges of heartbeats per minute used to structure exercise intensity, typically expressed as percentages of maximum heart rate.
Training in different zones produces different physiological effects—lower zones build endurance and burn fat, while higher zones improve speed and cardiovascular capacity.
Most systems divide effort into five zones, from easy recovery to all-out effort: I kept my heart rate in zone two for the long run.
