hand recount
Ballot-by-ballot verification
A hand recount is a manual retallying of ballots, typically conducted after an election when results are contested or margins are narrow.
Election officials physically examine and count each ballot rather than relying on machine tabulation: The candidate demanded a hand recount after losing by fewer than five hundred votes.
Hand recounts are slower but may catch errors machines miss.
