half-read

Half-read describes something partially but not completely read: a half-read novel on the nightstand, half-read emails piling up in my inbox.

The term suggests interruption or abandonment—books started with good intentions but set aside, articles skimmed but never finished.

It can also describe a person with superficial knowledge: He's half-read in philosophy, dangerous enough to argue but not enough to be right.
