growth arc
Character evolution path
A growth arc is the trajectory of a character's development through a narrative, tracing how they change from beginning to end.
The term comes from storytelling—novels, films, television—where compelling characters don't remain static but evolve through conflict and experience: Her growth arc from naive recruit to seasoned leader drove the whole series.
The concept extends beyond fiction to describe personal development: Starting therapy began a real growth arc for him.
