ground sloths
Prehistoric lumbering mammals
Ground sloths were large, slow-moving mammals that lived in the Americas until roughly ten thousand years ago.
Unlike their surviving tree-dwelling relatives, ground sloths were terrestrial and could grow enormous—some species reached the size of elephants.
They walked on the sides of their feet, their claws curled inward.
Fossils of ground sloths have been found from Alaska to Patagonia.
