grease pit
Under-car work channel
A grease pit is a recessed area in a garage floor that allows mechanics to stand beneath a vehicle and work on its underside—changing oil, inspecting exhaust systems, accessing transmissions.
Before hydraulic lifts became standard, grease pits were common in service stations: The old shop still has a grease pit from the 1950s.
