grays out
Fades to inactive
Grays out describes interface elements becoming dimmed and unclickable, indicating they're temporarily unavailable: The save button grays out until you make changes.
The visual change—text or icons shifting to gray—signals that an option exists but isn't currently accessible.
By extension, anything that fades or becomes indistinct grays out: My memory of that day just grays out.
