going mad

Losing one's mind

Going mad describes losing one's sanity or mental stability: I thought I was going mad when I kept hearing voices.

More commonly, it's used hyperbolically for intense frustration, obsession, or restlessness: This waiting is driving me mad, She's going mad trying to find her keys.

In British English especially, going mad can mean becoming wildly enthusiastic or losing restraint: The crowd went mad when the band took the stage.
