glass lizards

Limbless but lizards

Glass lizards are legless lizards that resemble snakes but belong to a different reptile family.

Unlike snakes, they have eyelids, external ear openings, and inflexible jaws.

The name comes from their tendency to "shatter"—their tails break off easily when grabbed, a defense mechanism allowing escape from predators.

Native to North America, Europe, and Asia.
