gas lights

Pre-electric street fixtures

Gas lights are lamps that burn natural gas or coal gas as fuel, common before electric lighting became widespread in the early twentieth century.

The soft, flickering illumination of gas lights evokes Victorian-era streets and interiors: The old theater still has its original gas lights.

The verb phrase gas light or gaslight has taken on a separate psychological meaning. (See gaslight.)
