Garbled audio is sound that has been distorted, scrambled, or corrupted so that it's difficult or impossible to understand.
The distortion might come from technical problems, poor transmission, or interference: The phone connection was bad—all I heard was garbled audio.
Words may be present but unintelligible, like listening through water or static.
