galvanised

Spurred into action

Galvanised is the British spelling of galvanized.

To galvanise metal is to coat it with zinc to prevent rust.

Figuratively, to galvanise someone is to shock them into action, as if by electric current: The crisis galvanised the community into organizing.

The word comes from Luigi Galvani, who discovered that electricity could make dead frogs' legs twitch.
