free-range chicken
Roaming farm bird
Free-range chicken refers to poultry raised with access to outdoor space rather than confined entirely to indoor cages or pens.
The term applies both to live birds raised this way and to their meat or eggs: free-range chicken breasts, free-range eggs.
Standards for what qualifies as free-range vary by country and certifying body, and the label doesn't guarantee extensive outdoor time—only that access was provided.
