formulaic language
Ready-made verbal chunks
Formulaic language refers to fixed or semi-fixed expressions that speakers use as ready-made units rather than constructing word by word: nice to meet you, how's it going, at the end of the day.
These chunks—idioms, greetings, collocations, catchphrases—are stored and retrieved whole, making speech more fluent and predictable.
Children acquire formulaic language early; second-language learners often struggle with it despite knowing the individual words.
