fire-stop
Blocks spreading flames
A fire-stop is a barrier or seal designed to prevent fire and smoke from spreading through openings in walls, floors, or ceilings—particularly around pipes, cables, or ducts that penetrate fire-rated structures.
The term also applies to horizontal blocking between wall studs that slows vertical flame spread.
As a verb, to fire-stop is to install such barriers: The contractor fire-stopped all the penetrations before inspection.
