field sketch
Quick nature illustration
A field sketch is a rough drawing made on location, typically by scientists, naturalists, or artists recording observations in the moment.
Unlike finished illustrations, field sketches prioritize quick capture of essential details—proportions, spatial relationships, notable features—over polish: Her field notebook was filled with sketches of rock formations and plant specimens.
The practice remains valuable even in the age of photography, as drawing forces closer observation than snapping a picture.
