fan belts
Alternator drive loops
Fan belts are rubber loops that transfer power from an engine's crankshaft to components like the alternator, water pump, and—originally—the cooling fan.
The name persists even in vehicles where the fan is electrically driven.
A squealing sound from under the hood often signals a worn or loose fan belt: The mechanic replaced the fan belt.
