false hero
Undeserving glory seeker
A false hero is a narrative figure who claims credit for heroic deeds they didn't perform or who appears heroic but lacks true virtue.
The term comes from folklore studies, where the false hero typically tries to usurp the real hero's reward—often by taking credit for slaying the dragon or rescuing the princess.
More broadly, it describes anyone who cultivates a heroic image while being undeserving: He was exposed as a false hero who fabricated his war record.
