fake check

Counterfeit bank draft

A fake check is a counterfeit or fraudulent check designed to deceive the recipient into believing it's legitimate.

Fake check scams typically involve sending a realistic-looking check for more than owed, then asking the victim to wire back the difference before the bank discovers the check is worthless: She deposited what looked like a real paycheck, but it bounced—classic fake check scam.
