faithless electors
Pledge-breaking ballot casters
Faithless electors are members of the U.S.
Electoral College who vote for a candidate other than the one they pledged to support.
Though rare, they occasionally break from the popular vote winner in their state: Several faithless electors cast protest votes in 2016.
Some states impose penalties; others allow the deviation.
