factor out
Remove shared element
To factor out is to identify and separate a common element from multiple items, originally from algebra where you extract a shared term from an expression.
The phrase extends to any situation where you isolate what's common: If you factor out inflation, wages haven't risen.
It can also mean to exclude something from consideration: Let's factor out the weather and focus on what we can control.
