exacerbations

Making things worse

Exacerbations are instances of making something worse or more severe, or of something becoming worse.

The word appears most frequently in medical contexts, where an exacerbation is a flare-up or worsening of a chronic condition: The patient experienced several exacerbations of her asthma over the winter.

Outside medicine, the term describes any intensification of a problem or conflict: His comments led to further exacerbations of the dispute.
