emotional catharsis
Cleansing through feeling
Emotional catharsis is the release of pent-up feelings, often bringing relief or clarity.
The term derives from Aristotle's observation that tragedy purges emotions like pity and fear in audiences.
In therapy, catharsis occurs when suppressed feelings finally surface: Writing that letter was an emotional catharsis—I'd been holding it in for years.
The release may come through crying, confrontation, creative expression, or simply talking things out.
