dry fire
Unloaded weapon drill
Dry fire is the practice of operating a firearm without live ammunition—pulling the trigger on an empty chamber or with a snap cap.
Shooters use dry fire to practice trigger control, sight alignment, and drawing from a holster without the expense or noise of live rounds: I dry fire for fifteen minutes every morning.
As a verb: She dry fired her pistol to check the trigger pull.
