dry drunks
Abstinent but unchanged
Dry drunks are people who have stopped drinking alcohol but retain the behavioral patterns, attitudes, or emotional dysfunction associated with alcoholism—irritability, self-pity, blame-shifting, rigidity.
The term comes from twelve-step recovery culture, where it suggests someone who achieved sobriety without doing the psychological work: He's been sober for years but he's still a dry drunk—angry and controlling as ever.
