dry-fire
Triggerwork without ammunition
Dry-fire means to pull the trigger of a firearm without ammunition, practicing mechanics without actually shooting: She dry-fired her pistol fifty times to work on her trigger pull.
The technique builds muscle memory and is standard in firearms training.
Dry-firing can damage some guns, particularly rimfire weapons, so snap caps are often used.
