double dash
Two hyphens together
A double dash is two hyphens typed consecutively (--), traditionally used in typewriting to represent an em dash before digital typesetting made the proper character accessible.
In programming and command-line interfaces, a double dash often separates options from arguments or signals the end of flags: git checkout -- filename.
In casual writing, double dashes still function as informal em dashes to set off parenthetical thoughts or mark abrupt breaks.
