division rivals
Same-group competitors annually
Division rivals are teams within the same division of a sports league who compete against each other regularly and often develop intense, ongoing competitive relationships.
Because teams in a division typically play each other multiple times per season and compete for the same playoff spots, these matchups carry extra weight: The Yankees and Red Sox are historic division rivals.
The term implies not just shared scheduling but accumulated history—grudges, memorable games, and heightened fan investment.
