devil's club

Spiny Alaskan plant

Devil's club is a large shrub native to the Pacific Northwest, covered in sharp spines on its stems and leaf undersides.

The plant grows in dense, shaded forests and can reach ten feet tall.

Indigenous peoples have long used it medicinally.

Hikers know it as a painful obstacle: I brushed against some devil's club and spent an hour pulling out spines.
