democratic revolutions
People overthrow tyrants
Democratic revolutions are uprisings that replace authoritarian rule with government based on popular sovereignty and civil rights.
The term often refers specifically to the wave of revolutions in late 18th-century America and France, but applies to any mass movement overthrowing monarchy, dictatorship, or colonial power in favor of representative government: the democratic revolutions that swept Eastern Europe in 1989.
