defensive alliance
Mutual protection treaty
A defensive alliance is an agreement between nations or parties to protect each other if attacked, without committing to joint offensive action.
The mutual obligation activates only when a member is the target of aggression: NATO began as a defensive alliance against Soviet expansion.
Such arrangements aim to deter attacks by guaranteeing collective response.
